The Story Behind the Healing Song

Many years ago I met a beautiful woman named Sharon. There was nothing in particular that was remarkable about her features, a normal, average, everyday face by society's beauty standards. She had lost most of her hair as a result of chemotherapy and was often puffy, a side effect of one of the medications she was on. Nonetheless, she was beautiful, a lovely, kind, gentle soul with one of the most beautiful hearts I've ever seen, and that beauty radiated throughout her entire being, despite the challenges she was facing at the time.

When I met her at an Open House, she had stage four colon cancer and had gone through at least one major surgery to remove the primary  tumor and at least two rounds of chemotherapy over the last two years to address multiple metastases to the lungs, chemotherapy that had thus far proven ineffective. Over a year later, we would discover that the cancer had also metastasized to her brain, but that perhaps is a story for another day.

She had come to the Open House because she wanted to explore alternative healing options. She was especially interested in Reiki as one of her doctors had suggested it may be of help to her. She asked a lot of questions, and eventually scheduled an appointment with me. Little did I know that this meeting would be the beginning of one of  the most important relationships in my career as a healer, and in my personal life as well. I learned more from my work with her than from any teacher or book I have ever come across, and she touched my life in more ways than I can adequately describe.

Over the next year or so, I worked with Sharon as a client. Reiki/energy work, flower essences and my intuitive ability were some of the many tools we used during her sessions. And even though she experienced some amazing healing on an emotional, spiritual and even a physical level, especially in terms of pain reduction, her disease continued to progress.

As she got sicker and sicker, I put a lot of thought into what might be the underlying metaphysical component of her illness, and what, if anything else, I, as a healer, could contribute to her healing process. I remember one day thinking, "Wouldn't it be wonderful, if there were a song, or a piece of music, that she or anyone else who needed healing, could simply play in the background throughout the day affirming healing, balance and wholeness -- a song specifically designed for that purpose?"

Over the next few days, with Sharon as my inspiration, I composed the "Healing Song" -- a simple song with a pretty melody and words that while repetitive enough to be meditative, changed often enough so as to not be monotonous.  The melody was hypnotic, and the lyrics affirmed healing, balance, wellness and wholeness for body, mind, heart and spirit. It was good. When it was done, I recorded it on an old 1980's style tape recorder and gave her the tape the next time I saw her, with an explanation as to what it was and how to use it.

I'd like to tell you that Sharon started listening to the tape of my "Healing Song" and miraculously recovered from her illness. But, she didn't. I'm not sure she ever even listened to the tape. By the time I gave it to her, she was very ill, only a week or two away from crossing over, and between her illness and the heavy medications she was on, she was not very present most of the time. I'm not sure she even remembered that I gave her the tape or that it existed. But, it had been created, and she was the inspiration for something that so many others have found helpful over the years since her passing.

I have sung the Healing Song as a healing meditation for myself and for others, in a variety of settings and venues, including my Monday Night Meditation series, many times since then. In 2006, I recorded and released a CD of the "Healing Song" so that more people would have the opportunity to benefit from what I often think of as Sharon's song -- a song of healing and wholeness inspired by one of the most beautiful souls I have ever known.

And from time to time, someone comes to me and tells me how helpful the "Healing Song" has been to them. Even now, almost two decades later, her life and story continue to have meaning, to touch the lives of others, not just the lives of her friends and family, but people whom she never met, people who hear her song of healing and balance and feel the power of healing and peace within their own hearts.

And now I'm taking the "Healing Song" one step further, for while it is powerful to simply listen to the "Healing Song" being sung to you, it can be even more powerful when you sing it yourself and with intention. I have made it a part of the Singing with Intention Workshops. In the Singing with Intention: Singing as Meditation Workshop on April 25, 2015, participants will have the opportunity to sing the "Healing Song" with me live. First, we will spend time learning the basic parts of the song, as well as the basics of singing with intention. Then, we will sing the "Healing Song" together as a healing meditation, creating the potential for an amazing healing experience for everyone. And for those who want to simply sit back, relax and have the "Healing Song" sung to you, I'll be offering my Healing Song Meditation on July 6, 2015 at The Owl Nest. Won't you join me?
